invention of divisors, both surd and rational; the resolutionof problems, arithmetical and geometrical ; the linear con-struction of equations ; approximating to the roots of allequations, &c. To the later editions of the book is com-monly subjoined Dr. Halley’s method of finding the roots ofequations. As the principal parts of this work are not adaptedto the circumstance of beginners, there have been publishedcommentaries upon it by several persons, as s’Gravesande,Castilion, Wilder, Sec.
In 1708 M. Reyneau published his Analyse Demontree, in2 vols. 4to. And in 1714 La Science du Calcul, S(c.
In 1709 was published an English translation of Alexander’salgebra. With an ingenious appendix by Humphry Ditton.
In 1715 Dr. Brooke Taylor published his Mctkodus Incre-meniorum: an ingenious and learned work. And in thePhilos. Trans, for 1718, An improvement of the method ofapproximating to the roots of equations in numbers.
In 1717 M. Nicole gave, in the memoirs of the academyof sciences, a tract on the calculation of finite differences.And in several following years, he gave various other tractson the same subject, and on the resolution of equations ofthe 3d degree, and particularly on the irreducible case incubic equations.
Also in 1717 was published a treatise on Algebra by PhilipRonayne.
Also in 1717 Mr. James Sterling published Line# tertiiOrdinis; an ingenious work, containing good improvementsin analytics. And in 1730 Methodus Differential is: sivc .tractatus de summatione et interpolaiione serierum infinitarum :with great improvements on infinite series.
In 1726 and 1729 Maclaurin gave, in the Philos. Trans,tracts on the imaginary roots of equations. And afterwardswas published, from his posthumous papers, his treatise onAlgebra, with its application to curve lines.
In 1727 came out s’Gravesand’s Algebra, with a specimenof a commentary on Newton’s universal arithmetic.
