In 1728 Mr. Campbell gave, in the Philos. Trans, aningenious paper on the number of impossible roots of equa-tions.

In 1732 was published Wolfius’s Algebra, in his course ofmathematics, in 5 vols. 4to.

In 1735 Mr. John Kirby published his arithmetic and al-gebra. And in 1748 his doctrine of ultimators.

In 1740 were published Mr. Thomas Simpson’s Essays ; in1743 his Dissertations, and in 1757 his Tracts ; in all whichare contained several improvements in series and other partsof Algebra. As also in his algebra, first printed in 1745,and in his Select Exercises, in 1752.

Also in 1740 was published professor Saunderson’s Ele-ments of Algebra, in 2 vols. 4to-

Also in 1741, in the memoirs of the academy of sciences,were given two articles by M. de Gua; on the number ofpositive, negative, and imaginary roots of equations. Withan historical account of the improvements in Algebra; in■which he severely censures Wallis for his partiality ; a cir-cumstance in which he himself is not less faulty.

In 1746 M. Clairaut published his Elemens d’algebre, inwhich are contained several improvements, especially onthe irreducible case in cubic equations. He has also severalgood papers on different parts of analytics, in the memoirsof the academy of sciences.

In 1747 M. Fontaine gave, in the memoirs of the academyof sciences, a paper on the resolution of equations. Besidessome analytical papers in the memoirs of other years.

In 1761 M. Castillion published, in 2 vols 4to, Newton’suniversal arithmetic, with a large commentary.

In 1763 Mr. Emerson published his Increments. In 1764his Algebra, &c.
