DES CRIPTIONOf theLABYRINTHOfERSAILLES.MONG all the Groves in the Park at Versailles, that called theLabyrinth is the most eminent, aswell for the Novelty of thedesign as the Number and Diversity of its Fountains (and Water-works)It is called the Labyrinth by reason of the many intricate Windings andTurnings that run thrô each other, in such sort, as it is impossible not toeir in them: now to the end that those who should so deviate, or loose theright Path might be entertained with something delectable, there is not oneTurning which doth not uno intuitu affoard the sight of divers Fountains:insomuch that upon every step one is surprized with a new Object. For the subject of these Water-works were some of the Fables of Aesopmade choice of which are so lively expressed, as that nothing can be foundof a more ingenious contrivance. The Animals which are of Brass and allin their natural colours are so fitly designed, that they seem to be in thevery action which they represent; the more for that they cast out wateralluding to the form of speech which the Fable renders them in.The different Order of every Fountain also makes a most acceptable varie-ty, and the glittering colours of rare selfs and fine pieces of Rocks, withwhich all the Cisterns are adorned and laid in, are so intermixed with theverdure of the Pallisades that one can never be sufficiently satisfied withthe number of the Fountains, as to the singular Invention of the same, inthe clear expression of what they represent, the beauty of the distinct A-nimals whereof they are composed, and the prodigious emission of waterwhich they cast up.***'T was
