Chancellor: and he shall faithfully enter such proceedings in the Register ofthe Order, as well as all documents which may be transmitted to him by theSecretary, or the Chancellor, for that purpose. He shall sedulously attend tothe service of the Order within the said United States of the Ionian Islands,more particularly in obtaining the Badges worn by ‘ Cavalieri’ (or Companions)and Knights Commanders of the Order in the said United States previous totheir promotion in the Order; and in ascertaining the decease of Members ofthe Order within the said United States, whose Badges he shall use everyexertion to obtain. He shall immediately acquaint the Chancellor with thedeath of any Member of the Order, who may happen to die within the saidUnited States of the Ionian Islands, or who may be a native thereof; and assoon as the Badge of a deceased Knight Grand Cross, Knight Commander, or‘ Cavaliere’ (or Companion), or of a ‘ Cavaliere’ (or Companion), or KnightCommander who has been promoted in the Order, is in his possession, he shall

acquaint the Chancellor therewith .” 2

At Investitures the Registrar, in the absence of allthe other Officers, is to administer the Oath and give theAdmonition . 3

His Mantle is the same as that of the King of Armsand Secretary, and His Badge, which he wears fromhis neck to the Ribband of the Order, is “ an Escutcheonof gold, enamelled, having on a field, gules, within theCircle and Motto of the Order, a representation of aBook, bound, azure, the leaves thereof, or .” 4

His Uniform is the same as that of the Secretary andKing of Arms.

The Statutes contain some other regulations for the purpose of ensuring thepresence of one Officer of the Order at Malta, and another in the IonianStates ; 5 and with the view of giving the Officers the same privileges as belongto the Officers of the Order of the Bath, it is further provided, that “ all theOfficers of this Most Distinguished Order, shall continually remain under theprotection of the Sovereign : and they are hereby declared to be Servants of the
