sedulously attend to the service of the Order within the said Island, more par-ticularly in obtaining the Badges worn by ‘ Cavalieri’ (or Companions) and byKnights Commanders in Our Island of Malta and its Dependencies, previousto their promotion in the Order; and in ascertaining the decease of Members ofthe Order within the said Island, whose Badges he shall use every exertion toobtain. He shall immediately acquaint the Chancellor with the death of anyMember of the Order who may happen to die within Our Island of Malta or itsDependencies, or who may be a native thereof; and as soon as the Badge of adeceased Knight Grand Cross, Knight Commander, or ‘ Cavaliere’ (or Com-panion), or of a ‘ Cavaliere’ (or Companion), or Knight Commander, who hasbeen promoted in the Order, is in his possession, he shall inform the Chancellor
thereof.” In the absence of the Prelate and Chancellorthe Secretary is to Administer the Oath, and give theAdmonition to Knights at their Investiture.
In all Ceremonials of the Order, “ the Secretary wearsa Mantle of scarlet silk lined with Saxon blue; and onhis breast, pendant from the Ribband of the Order, aroundhis neck, an Escutcheon of gold, enamelled, having on afield, gules, within the Circle and Motto of the Order, twoPens, saltirewise or .” 7
His Uniform is the same as that of the Chancellor,except that it has no embroidery on the edges; and thebuttons are those appointed for the Kings of Arms andHeralds.
THE KING OF ARMS.
The nomination of the King of Arms is vested, by the Statutes, in theGrand Master. His duties consist in attending all Investitures, in conductingthe newly appointed Knights Grand Cross, and Knights Commanders, to theSovereign, or his representative, bearing the Ensigns before them; and in theabsence of the Prelate, Chancellor, and Secretary, he is to administer to them
