HISTORY OF THE

[THE SECRETARY.

THE SECRETARY.

The Secretary’s duties are not described in the Statutes, and all thatoccurs respecting him, relates to his Badge and Habit. It may be inferred, however, that he ought to conduct the correspondence of the Order, and toattend its Chapters and other Ceremonials. He has not any salary, butreceives for his Fee the sum of £25 at the Investiture, and the same amountat the Installation of each Knight Companion.

By the Ordinance of 1783, the Secretary’s Mantle is directed to be “ of thesame length as that of the Registrar, with a Surcoat of white silk 1 and by the

Statute of May 1833, an Ensign was ordered to beworn on the left side, containing the Cross of SaintPatrick, gules, on a field argent; 2 but, unlike theEnsign on the Mantles of the Prelate, Chancellor, and Registrar, it is not surrounded by the Motto. As neither of these Ordinances mention either thematerial or colour, it is necessary to add, that theMantle of the Secretary and of the Genealogist ismade of sky-blue satin, and is tied with Cordons ofblue silk and gold.

His Badge, which is worn from the neck toa sky-blue Ribband, is precisely like that of theKnights, except that it has not the Circle contain-ing the Motto; and it is surmounted by the ImperialCrown.
