THE great dangers Malta had escaped rendered it abso-lutely necessary that some method should be adopted toprevent them in future. Orders were therefore issued, thatfrom that time the slaves attending on the knights andprivate individuals should be obliged to retire to the bagnios,or prisons for the slaves, at sun-set; and there remain tillsun-rise the following morning. The next consideration wasto bestow some reward on those who had discovered the con-spiracy. The Persian soon proved unworthy the favours con-ferred on him, and was sent out of the island : as to theJew, a pension was granted to him and his descendants; hehad too a house assigned him, over the door of which was aninscription, stating the important service he had rendered theorder. The grand-master and the council, wishing to perpe-tuate the memory of this event, caused the anniversary to beconstantly celebrated; and it continued to be observed till the
