Great disputes arose concerninghis election; and several of theknights were of opinion that the ab-dication of his predecessor could notbe valid without the approbation ofthe pope. The king of Jerusalem,and the patriarch, in conjunctionwith the bishops, appeased the dis-putants, and it was agreed to haverecourse to the sovereign pontiff;but whether or not Gastus receivedhis bull of election is unknown ; asindeed are the time and place of hisbirth. He only reigned one yearand a few months; and not fouryears, as asserted by some authors.It is a matter of doubt, whether heabdicated or died in office. Hiselection, it is thought, took place
