Extractum Colocynthidis. L. D. Extract of Colocynth. Take ftjof the pulp of colocynth, and one gallon of water; boil down to Oiv;strain while hot, and evaporate to form an extract. Eight ounces ofpulp give three of extract.Medicinally it is purgative without griping, in doses of gr. v to 3SS inpills taken at night. It is apt to become mouldy or tough bykeeping.

Extractum Colocynthidis Composituji. L. D. Compound Extractof colocynth. Cathartic Extract. Take Jvj of the pulp of colocynthsliced, Jxij of extract of aloes in powder, Jiv of gum resin of scam-mony, jj of cardamom-seeds in powder, Jiij of hard soap, one gallonof proof spirit. Digest the pulp of the colocynth in the spirit forfour days with a gentle heat, strain, and add to the liquor, thealoes, scammony, and soap; then evaporate to form an extract, andadd the powdered cardamoms. The London College has restoredthe soap, which was erroneously supposed to be incompatible withcalomel.Medicinally it is a strong cathartic, and is much used in combinationwith calomel, blue pill, or rhubarb, with a little oil of cloves toprevent griping. The dose alone is gr. v to ^ss in combination withgr. j to gr. iij of calomel. It is often in a bad state from long keeping, and it is injurious to softenit by heat. It should be kept in the state of powder to prevent itsspoiling.

Extractum Conii. L. E. D. Extract of Hemlock. Take ftj of freshhemlock-leaves, bruise with a little water in a stone mortar, expressthe juice, and evaporate without letting the dregs subside, to form anextract. The power of this extract depends both on the soil and theexposure where the herb grows, and on the season: just when itbegins to seed is the best time, and the seeds should be taken withthe leaves.Incompatible with all the vegetable acids.

Medicinally it is said to be a powerful sedative along with hyoscyamusin pulmonary and tracheal irritation, chronic catarrh, phthisis, &c.,beginning with gr. j every four or six hours, and going very cautiouslyas high as 3j, or even, in the course of a day, 3Jss; but this lastdose is seldom to be ventured upon. It is also given in carcinomauteri and scrofula, and is strongly anti-aphrodisiac.Poisonous, the same as the leaves. See Conii Folia.

Extractum Dulcamara . This is made precisely like extract of bel-ladonna.

Extractum Elaterii. L. D. Extract of Elaterium. Slice ripe wildcucumbers, strain the juice with gentle pressure through a fine hair
