Extractum Belladonna. L. E. Extract of Belladonna, or DeadlyNightshade. Take ftj of the fresh leaves of belladonna, bruise in astone mortar with a little water, press out the juice, and evaporatewith the dregs to an extract. It has no smell, but is slightly bitter.Medicinally it is narcotic and sedative in doses of gr. 4 slowly increasedto gr. v in form of pills, in cases of neuralgia, rheumatism, &c. Ex-ternally it is used in necroses and other painful ulcers, to allay pain ;also to dilate the pupil of the eye. Barry's extract is acrid and morepowerful.Poisonous as the leaves. See Belladonna.Extractum Cascarill.«: Resinosum. D. Resinous Extract of Cas-carilla. Take fcj of cascarilla bark in coarse powder, Oiv of rectifiedspirit, macerate for four days, decant, strain, boil the residuum inOx of water to Oij ; filter, and evaporate the decoction, and distilthe tincture in a retort till both are thickened; then mix and eva-porate to an extract. The aroma is driven off by this process, and asimple hitter remains.Medicinally it is tonic in doses of gr. x to 3j in pills for dyspepsia,hysteria, &c.Extractum Cinciionje. L. E. D. Extract of Peruvian Bark. Takejbj of the bark of the Cinchona lancifolia, one gallon of water, boildown to Ovj, strain while hot, and repeat this process four timessuccessively with the same quantities of water ; strain, and mix allthe liquors together, and evaporate to an extract. It is directed tobe kept both in a soft state for pills, and in a hard state for powders.Decomposition. The quinia and cinchonia of the bark absorb oxygenduring the process, and are precipitated and rendered inert. Theextract is therefore weaker than bark.Medicinally it is a hitter tonic in doses of gr. x to 5SS, but uncertain in

its effects.Carry's Extract of Bark, is prepared by distilling the tincture madewith rectified spirit, till all the alcohol is dissipated ; then allowingthe solution to cool, removing the resinous matter that floats on it,and inspissating the residuum with a gentle heat. It is of a brilliantruby red, and smells like bark.Extractum Cinchona Rksinosum. L. E. D. Resinous Extract ofBark. Take ifeij of the baik of Cinchona lancifolia, one gallon ofrectified spirit, digest for four days, strain, and distil the tincture bya water-bath till of a proper consistence.Imitated by an extract of the hark of the JEsculus Hippocastanum, or

horse-chesnut, with yellow resin.Medicinally it is bitter and austere, and in doses of gr. x to gr. xxx inpills, or dissolved in any aromatic distilled water.
