Endive. The garden sort is used as a salad; the roots of the wild sort,Chichorimn intybus, which is very common in the south, but rare inthe north of Britain, are used to adulterate ground coffee.Enema. A form of medicines vulgarly called glyster, or clyster, intro-duced by an apparatus into the rectum.Enema Amyli cum Opio. Enema of Starch with Opium. Take 3j,or jij of starch, Jij of cold water, Jiv to Jvj of boiling water, gr. ij togr. iv of powdered opium. Triturate the opium and starch togethertill they are well divided, add the cold water gradually, and lastlythe boiling water.Medicinally it may be given in pains of the rectum from cancer, fistula,strictures, &c.Enema Anodynum. Anodyne Enema. Take Jviij of decoction ofchamomile, Jxij of decoction of poppies ; mix, and give in peritonealirritation, &c.Enema Aperiens. Laxative Enema. Take Jj each of castor oil andhoney, Jx of infusion of linseed; mix, and give to open the bowelsgently.Enema Astringens. Astringent Enema. Take Jj of powder ofgalls, Ojss of distilled water, boil to Oj, and strain ; give in pro-lapsis ani, and piles.Enema Belladonna. Take gr. xij of dried leaves of belladonna, 5 v jof warm water to make an enema.Medicinally in retention of urine arising from spasm. (Dr. Cop-land.)Enema Catharticum. D. Cathartic Enema. Take Jj of manna, §xof compound decoction of chamomile, 3J of olive oil, and 3 SS of sul-phate of magnesia. Mix, and give in lethargy and apoplexy.Ei'ters into Enema Fcetidum. D. .

Enema CinchonjB. Bark Enema. Take 3j of powdered Peruvianbark, 31J of chamomile flowers, Oj of distilled water; boil to 3X, andstrain ; give in fistula, prolapsus recti, &c, as a tonic.Enema Colocynthidis Compositum. Compound Enema of Colo-cynth. Take jj of the pulp of colocynth, 3X of boiling water, Jsseach of muriate of soda and syrup of buckthorn ; mix for an enemain coma, and stupor.Enema Commune. Common enema. Take Oj to Oij of barley water,Jij of olive oil, Jj of sulphate of magnesia; mix, and give as a pur-gative.Or, take Oj to Oij of barley water, Jij to jiij of olive oil; mix, andgive as a laxative.Enema Domesticum.
