Boracic Acid is found native in the hot springs of Lipari and Sasso.It is compounded of boron and oxygen. It is prepared by addingsulphuric acid to purified borax dissolved in about four times itsweight of boiling water. On cooling, the boracic acid is depositedin form of scaly shining crystals, which may be purified by redis-solving and recrystallizing them twice or thrice. It has a bitterishtaste like Epsom salts, has no smell ; renders turmeric paper brown ;and slightly reddens vegetable blues.

Borago Officinalis. O. Borage. A native plant, whose virtues,if it have any, are now neglected. It is put into cool tankards, forsummer drinking; and as Margraff found it to contain nitrate ofpotass, it must be more or less diuretic.

Boras, Borate. The name given to salts formed by boracic acid witha base, as borate of magnesia, otherwise termed boracite.

Borax is the bi-borate of soda. See Sovm Sub-boras. Both the nativeand the refined borax are used in soldering.

Boric Acid. The same as boracic acid.

Boron is a dark olive-coloured substance, having neither taste norsmell, and is insoluble in water, alcohol, ether, and oils. It is pro-cured by heating boracic acid with potassium, when the oxygenunites with the potassium and sets the boron free. It is com-bustible.

Botany Bay Resin. It is an exudation from the Acarois resinifera.It has a sweetish taste, does not adhere to the teeth when chewed,and melts, at a moderate heat. It is fragrant when ignited.
