THE SECOND EDITION.

In preparing a new edition of this Work, I have care-fully revised and corrected the whole; and have madeconsiderable impi-ovements in the arrangement of thelonger articles, with the design of facilitating reference.The new articles, and important additions to the old,amount to more than a thousand, exclusive of an enlargedTable of Medical Contractions, Tables of Chemical Affi-nities, and Tables of Foreign Weights and Measures.The new articles consist of such as have been introducedinto the last edition of the Dublin Pharmacopoeia ; of allthe acids (see the article Acid), alkalies, and other che-mical principles of recent discovery ; of the medicinesintroduced by American, French, German, and Italianpractitioners ; of the insertion of the Pharmacopoeia ofthe Veterinary College ; and of the officinal compoundsinto which every simple enters. In the foreign depart-ment, I have been much indebted to " M. Jourdan'sPharmacopee Universelle," a work of extraordinaryresearch, and containing the most voluminous collectionof formulae ever published.

The page having been enlarged to make room for theseadditions, I am happy to say that the work is little in-creased in size, and not at all in price.
