NOTICE

THE THIRD EDITION.

Another edition of this Work having been calledfor, I have again gone over the whole with care, andhave also had it carefully revised by several medicalgentlemen, among whom I may mention my regrettedfriend, the late A. Clarke, M. D., and Jacob Dixon, Esq.,Member of the Apothecaries' Company. In consequenceof these several revisions, and of the care which I havetaken in reading the proofs, I trust that this edition is ascorrect as a work, so unavoidably liable to error fromthe mis-printing of quantities, can well be rendered.

The additions, amounting to several hundreds, whichI have made, consist for the most part of organic prin-ciples, chiefly acids, of recent discovery, many of themnever before, that I am aware of, published in English ;of medicines, either new, or of rising reputation amongAmerican and Continental practitioners; and of newpreparations of substances already known, among whichI may particularize the articles on Iodine, derived fromthe valuable work of Lugol, and other sources.

I have been particularly indebted for the most valuableadditions, to the work of Dr. Chapman, of Philadelphia,on Therapeutics and Materia Medica ; to Togno andDurand's American translation of Edwards and Vava-seur's Materia Medica; to Professor De Candolle's Phy-siologie Vegetale, for new vegetable principles ; and fortesting the quantities of compounds, to Dr. Thomson'selaborate and profound work on the First Principles ofChemistry.
