This is a very trifling Medicine,and of no ufe but as any fîmple Un-guent, or plain Lard may be ; andtherefore it is almoft quite neglect-ed in Practice.

Cauterium Potentiale, The Poten-tial Cautery.' This is made of a ftrong Lixi-

• vium of Pot-Afhes and Quick-

* lime, boil'd to a drynefs.'Some fay it will be ftronger if

made ot the Aihes of Afh-wood andBark ; but if what has been alrea-dy faid concerning fixed Salts madeby Incineration, in the foregoingPart, be true, there can be nothingmateria! in this difference. Thisis us'd in Surgery only, to openAbfceffes, by eating a way thro' tothe digefted Matter, or to makeIffues by the fame means ; but itrequires to be carefiilly guarded bywhat the Surgeons call Defenfativeswhich are Piaifters fo laid upon thePart, as to fuffer the Medicine toIpread no farther, than is expofedto its Operation by an Hole cut inthem. This is to be kept clofeftopt in a Phial, becaufe it will other-wife imbibe the Air, and lofe itscauftic Quality.

This is much recommended byfome in hypocondrical and mania-cal Affections, to be frequently re-peated from 9 i. to ii. in Pills ; thoI believe it is not ready made in theShops.

Elaterium. It is the Fácula, thatis, the Settlings of the Juice of wildCucumbers, dryed.

Julapium Alexandr.'num, is ft iv.of Red Rofe-Water, and ft i. offine Loaf-Suçar melted together.

Julapium Rolatum, is ft iv. ofDamask-Rofe- Water, and ft i. offine Loaf-Sugar diflblv'd.

The difference in thefe is trifling,and the Virtues of both are lb ¡n-fignificant, as jufUy to leave themhardly any regard in Practice ; thothey yet keep their Place in the Col-lege Difpenfatory.
