52 2 The Complete Englifh T>ifpenfatory. Parr III

« ther, and make them into a Plai-; fter, S. A.'

This is afcribed to Nicolaus inthe Auguftan Difpenfatory, as like-wife by the firft of the College, in-to which it is tranfcribed ; but herethe Quantity of Saffron is muchabridged. This feems to have ta-ken its Name from the Saffron andVinegar, both which are exprefTedby it, notwithstanding the fmallfhare Vinegar hath in it ; and in-deed the Augufian Collection givesone Prefcription, under this Title, from Vigon, which is alfo in thefiríl Edition of the College, thathath in it neither Saffron nor Vine-gar, but that whole Compofition isvery juftly cenfured by Zwelfer.

The Pharma-copasia Regia gives like- Emplaftrum Sticticum, Sticlic Plai-wife a Prefcriotion hezr-nn »h. - *

This is hut a very modern Con-trivance, tho much in efteem a-mongft fome Perfons, chiefly fordifcuffmg Gouty Tumours, and theJuices Stagnating after Sprains.

Viife a Prefcription bearing thisTitle, and not greatly differing inMaterials. This hath been in greatefteem for many Intentions ofConfequence ; tho Hildanus, Cent.4. Ob£ 99, 100. takes notice offbme Inconveniences and Mifchiefsarifing from its ufe. The mannerof its Compofition hath been veryparticularly directed by Zweifer ;but what the College have thoughtfit to give here, is fufficient for anyCompounder. Notwithstanding theAbridgment of the Saffron in itsquantity (which in the njes/bremight probably be from the Vir-tues of ours being fo much beyondany that is foreign) yet the Cove-toufnefs of our wholesale Medicine-Makers hath found out a way todiminifh even that, and it is to befeared Sometimes, to imitate itsColour, without putting ir. anv Saf-fron at all ; fo that it is needful tobe cautious, when any great dé-pendance is had hereupon. It ischiefly ufed to warm and ftrengtheadebilitated Parrs.
