This was firft ordered by Meßtewith Frankincenfe, as it is here withOlibanum, and without Saffron.Schroder hath got it with fome dif-ference from both, having Lauda-num befides the Opium, and addingS i. of Ambergreafe to fomewhat alefs Quantity of the Mafs. He faysthat -S. Clvffius ufed it with greatSuccefs to breeding Women whoWere in danger of Mifcarriage fromthe Trouble of frequent Coughing.It is much that the Augilftan Difpen-fatory, as well as the Pharmacopoeia.Regia, hath omitted it ; as it is aVery good Medicine, and nowmuch ufed in common Prefcriptionagainft Catarrhs, vc. In this Com-pofition the Storax muft be ftrain'dand the Opium, tho fome dry andpowder it, and beat together withthe Extract of Liquorife into aPafte } and then receive the reft ofthe Ingredients in Powder. Thereis gr. i. of Opium in every gr. vi.of this Mafs ; and therefore it oughtin the extreme Dofe not to exceedXii. or xv. gr. It has all the Virtuesof the Pill de Cynogloßb, but hasfomewhat more than double thequantity of Opium in that. It ismuch more ufed than any other ofthis Intention ; but it ought to bewith caution.

Here is fuppofed fo much of théVinegar of Squills to be ufed indiffolving the Gum Ammoniacum sas is fuffi cient to give a due Con-fidence to the whole. The firftDifpenfatory of our College had no-thing under this Title, altho thevhave added one fince, which wasoriginally from Quercetan, and cor-rected by Senertus : Notwitbftand-ing which, Zwelfer in his Animad*ver ¡ions upon it in the AuguflanJD,[penfat try, is very prolix in di-recting the manner of its Compofi-tion ; but the College have now a-gain expunged that as an injudiciousand very troublefome Mixture, andfubftituted this as vaftly more fim-ple, and more efficacious to theIntention it is defign'd for, fromBontius, formerly Phyfician to theHoufe of Orange, as it is retained bySchroder in his Pharmacopoeia Medi-co-Chymica ; where he tells us thacit was of fo ¡jreat efteem in Hollandas to be religioufly made commonfor the Publick Benefit Schrodergives alfo the PiluU Tartárea of6¡ucrcetan, not much different fromthat in the Auiußan, and the for-mer Edition of the College, as alfoa fliorter Compofition of his ownunder the fame Appellation ; butfh"fe have none o f them obtainedenough to come down to our pre¿fent Practice.
