There are manyPrefcriptions in the antient practicalWriters and Difpenfatories, and par-ticularly in the Collections of Schro-der and Z<welfer, under the Titles ofPanchymagoga, which come verynear to this, excepting it being morecrouded with Ingredients, and lefselegantly compounded. Some Shops,efpecially thofe of wholefale Dea-lers, who make vaft quantities at atime, put in, without order, Saltof Tartar, to preferve this Extraitmoift, which otherwife grows hard,and requires a little frefh Spirit tofof ten it. If this grows likewife toobrittle, moiften it with frefh Spirit.It may be given from gr. xv. to 3 ii.and ¡s effectual to all the Purpofesthe Alœphangina (lands recommen-ded for. It is much more in Pre-fcription than that, becaufe it an-fwers the common Intention of aCathartic much better, being ftron-ger and brisker in Operation 5 whichaltho it moil pleafes common Peo-ple, yet the greateft Feats are to bedone by Medicines of flower Opera-tion, unlefs the Humours wantingEvacuation are only in the firft Paf-fages, which is rarely the Cafe offuch as take Purges. This at pre-fent is in great efteem in the Shops

for an Head-Purger ; and it is indeedthe chief Pill in ufe in mod Cafeswhere Cathartics are prefcribed inthis Form.

Pilulae Stomachica: cum Gummi,Stomachic Pill with Gams.' Take of the fined Aloes, | i.' of Sena Leaves cleanfed, 3 v. of

* Gum Ammoniacum diffolv'd in' Vinegar of Squills, | fs. of Madichc and Myrrh, ana 5 ifs- of Saffron

* and Salt of Wormwood, ana 3 fs.

* Make them into a Mafs for Pillsc with a diffident quantity of the

* Syrup of Buckthorn.'

This Compofition was at firflin the College Difpenfitory, althothere are PiluU S(omachica fromMefue, but thofe are very differentfrom thefe, and now juftly expun-ged as a trifling Medicine, confid-ing of nothing but Aloes, Madichand' red Rofes, with Syrup ofWormwood. In the Au^uflan andRcyal Difpenfatories there are aliofeveral Compofitions under the Ti-tle of Stomachic P.lls, but they feemfo ill calculated for any one Inten-tion, that they are now quite outof ufe. And this is hardly ever pre-fcribed in the prefent Practice.
