former : but therein are likewife

many other folutive Syrups of Ro-

fes with Agaric, Hellebore, ¿>v.

which are very juftly expunged

here.

Syrupus de Spina Cervina, Syrup

of Buckthorn.

' Tate of the Juice of ripe and

* freih Buckthorn Berries, gather'd

* fpace of one whole day ; then' ftrongly prefs it out, and put to

* it ft ifs. of white Sugar, ta be

* boiled up to the Confiftence of a1 Syrup in a Bath-Heat.'

This hath not been till of late re-ceiv'd by. the College into their Dif-penfatory. The Spices are com-monly tied clofely in a thin Bag,and fufpended in the Syrup whilebo/ling to a Confiftence.

The College have, in their laft Dif-penfator^ thrown out a vaft Num-ber of injudicious and troublefomeCompofitions of this Clafs, toolong to enumerate here particularly ;which will be a great Conveniencyin extemporaneous Practice, bothfor the Prefcriber and Compounder,befides the much more elegant andpalatable manner fuch Intentionsare nov/ provided for in otherPorms. But with all thefe Emenda-tions of this Clafs, here are a greatmany yet retain'd of little Value,and fuch as are hardly ever ufed,which were omitted for that Rea-ibn in the former Editions of this,and now inferted only in deferenceto the College Authority.

Mel Anthofatum, Honey ofRofemary.

' Take of Rofemary Flowers,

» irefh gather'd, % i. of clarify'd

* Honey It hi. mix them together

* in a Pot, and keep for ufe.'

Mel Helleboratum, Honey ofKellebore.

c Take of the Roots of white' Hellebore dried, and cut into' flices, lb i. of common clear' Water lb xiv. let them infufe to-' gether for the fpace of three days,c and then leifurely evaporate to the

* confumption of half the quantity' of Liquor, and boil it up when' ftrain'd, by ftrong Expreffion, to« the Confiftence of Honey, with' ft iii. of the fined white Ho-

* ney.'

Mel Mercuriale, Honey of Mercury.

' Take of the Juice of Mercury' ft iii. of Honey ft ii. let them be' depurated and boiled up together,' to the Confiftence of Honey,'

Thefe are Forms deriv'd chieflyfrom the Arabian Phyficians, andparticularly Mefue, who much ufedHoney in their Practice. Theywere at firft recetv'd by our Col-lege, and the three preceding havebeen continued down to the pre-fent Difpenfatory, without any Al- •teration ; but they are not now fomuch ufed in extemporaneous Prac-tice, as heretofore, except the laft,which is commonly directed ¡aGlyfters.

Mel Elatines, Honey of Paul';Betony.

' Take of the clarify'd Juice ofc Paul's Betony, and of clarify'd' Honey, ana it iv. and boil ta' a due Confiftence.'

This was never directed beforethe läft College Difpenfatory, ei-ther by the College, or in any otherDifpenfatohes, that I have metwith.
