33. Nucís Moschata, ofNutmegs, called alfo Nux Aroma-tica Myrifiica, feu Vnguen-tor'm, by Mathiolus and Clujius :the latter diftinguiihed them intoMale, which are the greater oblongfort ; and Female, which are theítvull round ones. Cafpar Bau-hine defcribes them by the Dis-tinction of Nucifla, or Nux Mof-ehata fruttu rotundo. This is amoil delicate Aromatic Fruit, andenters into our Sauce as well asour Phyfu. It is a great Comfor-ter of the Head and Stomach ; andlikewife a good Carminative, byits warm difcuffing Quality. Butit is to be ufed fparingly, for if intoo large a quantity, it will fumeup too much, and prove ofFenùvein the fame manner as Perfumes doto fome particular Conftitutions.Btmuller very much commends it,boil'd with Motherwort, in fomeAffections of the Womb, and ufedas a Bath.

. other Parts of the t,j, y -lndies. Thereis alfo the Piper ludicum calPd Cap-ficum and Guinea Pepper, which

frows in large Pods, and is ufedy the Spaniards in their Sauces andPickles; but Medicinal Prefcriptionstake no notice of it. This is muchof the iâme nature as Cubebs, butrather hotter and drier. It enterstherefore not only into many Com-portions as a Cephalic, but aliointo Cathartics, as a Corrector ;it afliiling the Bowels the ealier toendure the Vellications of a purgingMedicine. Hoffman commends itin the Cholic, to be drank whole ina little Brandy. And our CountryPeople have got a Trick of curingAgues with a large Dole of thefame, taken juilbefore the Fit comesjbut they require good Athletic Con-ftitutions, who fubmit to be let onfire, to be cured of a contrary Ex-treme. It fometimes likewife willrelieve the Tooth-ach. The LongPepper, ufed too in Medicine, tho"not by a great deal fo much inSauces as the other, is pretty muchof the fame Virtues.

3^. Pimento: This is calledby the common People All-Spice,and indeed it has in its Tafte andFlavour fomewhat refembling moltof the Spices. It comes to us chieflyfrom Jamaica, and is geneially foldby the Name of Jamaica Pepper.It is accounud a Species of theCariophyllus Aromaticus, and byfome titled Cariophyllus Aromati-cus Americanus, laurt acuminatisfoliis, fruBu orbiculari. We meetnot with it in either antient or mo-del n Difpenfatory Compositions, un-lefs in the laft Edition of our Col-lege. But it is pretty much got in-to the Shops as a Succedantum tofome Spices which are dearer : Andfome have found a way to ufenothing elfe in the Aqua Mirabilis,tho' none of it is order'd ; and itanfwers fo well, that if it be care-fully diftill'd, and the Spirit be good,
