Alkermes, of Alkermes.It is the Berry of the Ilex aculeatacocci glandifera, of Cafper Bauhine,and the Ilex coccigera of Clufiu:,called Coccum infeflorium by .M*-thiolus, and Coccus baphica by Dio/^-corides. The Juice is wonderfullygrateful to the Palate, and a fineCordial. The Confection in whichit is the principal Ingredient, and towhich it gives its Name, is not atall better, if fo good, as the clari-fy'd Juice alone. There is a veryfine Cordial Liquor, which takes itsName from it, in Bates : fee Part 3.cf Compounds. This Juice, or ra-ther the Confection made with it, isin great requeft amongfl: our Mid-wives, for affifting in Delivery. Itis reckon'd likewife a Bringer-out ofthe Meajles ma* Small-Pox.
19. Banilli, Vanelloes. Thisis the Fruit of the Aracus Aromati-cus, diftinguifhed by Mr. Ray, Volu-bilis filiquofa Mexicana folks Plan-taginis : It comes from New Spain;and is chiefly mixed with Chocolate,to which it gives a Flavour agree-able to Ibme, but hurtful to many asa Perfume.

Many of theforts, and particularly the Kenti/hRed Cherries, are a very wholefomeFruit, and grateful to the Stomach,but the black only are uied in Me-dicine. They are prefcribed in allDifeafes of the Head and Nerves,and by fome are alio accountedDiuretic, eipecially the Water di-ftill'd from them.

They are the Fruit of a kind ofJeflamy, with a Chefnut Leaf, anda white iweet Flower. Thefe arenot employ'd in Medicine ; yet theyare fo much in every one's way,(that is, the Liquor made of them)that it may be worth a Peribn'swhile to know that they are verydrying, and therefore in Dilbrdersof the Head from Fumes, and toogreat Moiftures, very ferviceableby their abibrbent Qualities. Thismod experience, who try them,after a Debauch of Wine or ftrongLiquors. But in thin and dryConftitutions they are very hurtful,as they dry the Nerves too much,and are apt to make them trem-ble, as in Palfies : By the lamemeans likewife they promoteWatching, by bracing the Fibrestoo tenfe for that Relaxation whichis neceflâry for Sleep. Altho' in aCafe of extraordinary Ddiuxionof Rheum from the Glands aboutthe Head and Stomach, in a coldConftitution, which occaJiond agreat hindrance to the Perfon'sfleeping, I once advis'd them ; andaccording to Expectation, theypro-cur'd Sleep, by abibrbing the fu-perfluous and continually diftiiiingRheum.
