Mit Chlor behandelt, geht Coffein über in Chlorcoffein, dasdurch Einwirkung von Natriumäthylat in Aethoxycoffein um-gewandelt wird. Aus diesem entsteht durch Erwärmen mit SalzsäureHydroxycoffein, das identisch ist mit der 1-3-7-Trimethylharnsäure:
