Preparations of

HYDRARGYRUS SULPHURA-TUS RUBER.

Red sulphurated Quicksilver.

Take of Quickfilver, purified, forty ounces.

Sulphur eight ounces, both byweight.

Mix the Quickfilver with the melted Sul-phur ; and, if the mixture takes fire, extin-guifh it by covering the vefTel; afterwards re-duce the mafs to powder, and fublime it.

R E M A R K.

This preparation was, in the laft Difpenfatory,called Cinnabaris faSiitia. The mixture of theQuickfilver and Sulphur, here direfted, is very aptto take fire, and a confiderable explofion frequentlyhappens (efpecially if the procefs is too haftiiy con-ducted) as foon as it grows confiftent, whenthepot,orveflel, muft be immediately clofe covered with awooden cover. In the fublimation, alfo, care muftbe taken to prevent the matter blocking up the neckof the bolt-head. By introducing at times an ironwire, fomewhat heated, into its neck, the Operator
