externally brown, with onc fide flatter, or rather hollowed,and a bulbulus, or clove, annexed, from v.'hich flowers willbe produced the fucceeding year. Taken up in autumn it iswhite within, flefhy, and fomewhat juicy. (Bergius.) Itsflowers, which are a whitifh-red purple with fix petals, ap-pear in autumn. Raii Hiß. Plant.

Ths frefh root in fummer, on being cut through, irritafesthe noftrils ;—when ehewed, ftrongly burning, and ftiffen-ing the tongue and fauces, for a long time. In autumn, thetafte is much weaker ; and, when the root is dry, it is inac-tive. Its effe£ts, when frefn, are diuretie, and in too largea dofe draßic, and even poifonous. The dry roct is fari-naceous and inadtive. Bergius.

Colomba, Colomba,the Root,

The root is brought to us, cut into roundifh pieces, aboutan inch long ; an inch, and fometimes two inches, thick jcovered with a very rough, thickiih, brown, bark ; the pa-renehyma flightly folid, appearing after a tranfverfe fectionjmarked with a large central difk, brown ftreaks, and yellowpoints. Thefmell is weakly aromatic, not difagreeable, —-
