council had condemned him to keep his room forthree months, whereas, the truth was, it was forhis having, with his usual indomitable fierce arro-gance, spoken disrespectfully of the councillorsthemselves, in their official presence, and it wasprison he richly merited; and he having beencondemned from the first by a chapter general,could not be declared innocent by an inferior tri-bunal, the grand master in his privy council; sodivers knights now petitioned the chapter generalto declare null and void all the proceedings inWest’s favour, under the late grand master, andconfirm the former sentence, depriving him of theturcopoliership, on which commissaries werenamed to instruct; and subsecpiently to theiropinion a month later, the final confirmation of thesentence of privation was pronounced, with thisadjunct, that the said West could not only neveragain wear the grand cross, but that for thefuture was to be denied admission into any of theorder’s assemblies.
