In Candia, not to have even the appearance ofdeclining an accorded privilege, the grand masterassumed all civil and criminal jurisdiction over hisown people, and held a chapter general, whereamong other things, in place of the Turcopolier SirJohn Bouch, slain at Rhodes, that dignity wasgiven to Sir William Weston, as well as the com-mand of the great karack, and that of the Pearl ofthe Sea to the Commander Sir John Maringo Farfan;which proves both these Englishmen to have beenexcellent naval officers for those times. The grandmaster also sent to Messina to stop the succours;for that Rhodes was already lost. At which theknights, congregated there to embark, were struckwith immense grief and disappointment. All theprinces began to regret. Who but envied thebright fame of having fought at Rhodes by LisleAdams side, and his immortal glory ? And it wasthen that Charles Y. exclaimed to his warriors: Nothing has ever been well lost but Rhodes.
