the duper duped. Mahomet’s infernal intentionwas to put Rhodes off its guard, and cool the fervourof the Latin princes. Amongst these was D’Aubus-son’s elder brother, the Vicomte de Monteuil, who,at the head of a rather large corps, raised andmaintained at his own expense, came to volunteerhis services; which were gratefully accepted, andhimself chosen to a high command in aid of hisyounger brother, throughout the impendingstruggle.’ And indeed there was a sort of friendlyrivalry in quickness of obedience, contrivance, in-dustry, and valour between these volunteers andthe knights themselves, during the whole siege.There was a good deal about spies (particularlyGreeks), and spy-boats, and secret intelligence, andpreliminary fence—carte and tierce—on both sides,during the two years that immediately precededthe famous 1480—nor only before iron, but assistingit. The scoundrels were for the most part treatedas they merited. Not but some of them had first,furnished the Turk with detailed maps, mostexactly minute, of the fortifications of Rhodes—maps used in the assaults ; when in the long run,the infamous draughtsman was found out, thepeople would have torn him to pieces, but that hisjailors had the mercy to hang him. 2
