Zacosta rendered his memory lasting by severalsplendid acts ; particularly building the gate andfort of St. Nicholas at his own expense, with someslight pecuniary aid from the Duke of Burgundy . 1Zacosta’s defending of Lesbos personally againstthe Turks, was remarkably gallant. Zacosta alsoenacted that the whole line of defences all roundthe city should be apportioned out to the differentLanguages, each Language to have its portion forever, and be named by its name; and none werestronger, or more aptly embellished than theEnglish bastion, to judge even by the remains of itat this day . 2
