returned to Acre, where within a short time thoseunpaid Papal ruffians 1 first insulted and finally-murdered some Mahometan merchants, and in amost disorderly sally infringed the truce. Accord-ing to Ebendoffer the legate had Papal ordersfrom Rome to break it; and the Leoben Chroniclesays, that when he in his pontificals ascended thepulpit, as the people thought, to bless them, it wasto pour anathema on them and all those who kepttruce with the Paynim, and upon that, quitted thecity. 2 3 And if that be in contrast with the charac-ter of the then Pope, that is no sufficient answer;for how much have Roman ministers, and all min-isters done, and will do without their mastersknowledge or even directly contrary to his well-known intentions! Which, it was easy to see, couldnot but bring down sure and speedy ruin upon theChristian cause. At which new displeasures, thisafflicted grand master, too, died of that mosthonourable of deaths, a broken heart, like his pre-decessor; and also like him, we have no othercertain date of Lorgnes death than that it musthave ensued before his successors election.
