ceeded by a burst of groans, sighs and lamenta-tions. The mortal remains of Baldwin entered bythe Golden Gate, followed by the procession. Latins,Syrians, Greeks, all weeping, and even the Saracensthemselves wept, 1 says Baldwin’s chaplain. At thesame moment Baldwin de Bourg, who, quite un-conscious of what had happened, was coming inat the Damascus Gate, to pass the Easter at Jeru-salem, alarmed by the plaintive cries, joined themourners, and wailed for his lord and relative, andaccompanied the funeral to Calvary, where the de-funct king was laid in a tomb of white Parianmarble, with the greatest pomp, alongside of God-frey’s mausoleum. Until within these late years,when it is reported that some malevolent bigotryof the Greeks induced them to wall up those twoancient monuments, every pilgrim visited withreverence the two royal brothers’ tombs. Seen byChateaubriant, Michaud found them no more. Asfor Mahometans (with their usual brevity), theyonly say: “ He died before reaching El Arish,coming from Egypt. From him that part of thedesert is called the Baldwin Sands. People thinkhe is buried there; but it is an error; there onlyhis entrails lie; but his body was buried atJerusalem.” 2
