Boulogne, or his cousin Baldwin de Bourg, Countof Edessa; and finally, the Christian hero re-ceived the last sacraments, that of confessionand the eucharist, and expired. His mournfulbrethren-in-arms then set about accomplishing hisultimate desires, his intestines were buried, anda heap of stones raised over them to mark thespot, which grave or cenotaph is to be seen to thisday not far from El Arish . 1

Then the Frank warriors set out on their long anddoleful march across the desert, marching day andnight to conceal Baldwin’s death, and their own af-fliction; and crossing in silence the mountain ofJudea, and the country of Hebron, they reachedJerusalem on Palm Sunday; on which day , 2 by anancient custom, all the Christians, with thepatriarch at their head, used to go in procession tothe Mountain of Olives; and they were in the actof descending from it, carrying palm branches, andsinging canticles to celebrate the entry of Jesusinto Jerusalem, when they met in the Valley ofJehosaphat, the train of Baldwin’s companions,bearing his coffin, which stopped their hymns all atonce, and struck first with a grievous silence, sue-
