Our hoftefs did not perplex us with along bill of fare, but producing a fmall piece of mutton, gave us to underhand that her larder contained nothingmore. A fcarcity of provifions is an inconvenience generally felt at this place, the inhabitants being obliged toprocure almoft every thing they ufe from Coblentz, which is at lead three leagues from Braubach. We foundlikewife that we were the firft guefts fhe had entertained at bed and board.

Whilst our dinner was preparing, we received a proof of her attention to us, which promifed to remove our» principal inconvenience. She recolle£ted there was a perfon in the town who had formerly ferved in the French

army, and immediately engaged him to attend, and interpret for us. He made his entre with the dinner, of which

I invited him to partake. He faid he had already dined, and having nothing before us very tempting, I prefled

him no further; but as foon as the landlady withdrew, (perceiving we could not eat the mutton,) he fell to, anddevoured every morfel of it. We complained very much of the badnefs of the meat, and defired him to commu-nicate what we faid to the landlady, and inform her that our dinner had only been a bit of bread. He preten-ded to do as we requefled, but it was evident from the looks and behaviour of the woman, that he had expref-fed himfelf very differently, for fhe appeared to be highly pleafed with what he faid.

Disgusted with this barefaced treachery, I carelefsly afked him if he knew any other perfon in the town whofpoke French ? But being too old a foldier to be taken by furprize, he anfwered me in the negative. At fupper,which conflfted of a plumb-pudding fomewhat in the Englifh tafte, he refumed his poft. I repeated the compli-ment of an invitation to partake with us, but the landlady being in the room, he declined it. We took him at hisword, and difpatched the whole ourfelves. Having fuffered great inconvenience at other places from Germancookery, I defired him to intreat the landlady that I might have no acid in any thing fhe dreffed for me. In thiscafe likewife I had reafon to believe that he miflnterpreted me, as every thing that was fet before us had a greaterproportion of acid than I had been plagued with at any other place.—By this artifice he fecured my fhare of theproviflon to himfelf, which he took however by health, for I could not prevail with him to tafte a morfel, whilft anyperfon belonging to the houfe was prefent. Nothing arofe to explain to me this part of his conduft. Perceivingthat he mifreprefented all my dire&ions concerning the manner of dreffmg my vi61uals; I could no longer re-frain from (hewing fome marks of difpleafure, which being obferved by the landlady, fhe applied to my inter-preter for an explanation; but learning nothing fatisfa61ory from him, fhe appeared greatly diftreffed, and oftenexclaimed in a piteous tone, miferable ! miserable!
