THOUGH I had many times experienced in my paffage on the Rhine, that the impreflion I received from ob-jefts which feemed to me to poffefs the higheft degree of grandeur and pi&urefque beauty, was almoft immediatelyfucceeded by that of others more beautiful and fublime; I left St. Goar without conceiving it poffible that anything comparable with the fubje&s I had left untouched in the neighbourhood of that city, would occur in the re-mainder of my tour.

I had therefore no difficulty in accommodating my views and expe&ations to humbler fcenes; but after theagreeable entertainment I had met with at the BoisVerd, I could not fo eafily reconcile myfelf to the wretchedaccommodations we were obliged to put up with at Braubach. For though the houfe by the water-fide, to whichchance had conduced us, was delightfully fituated, the leaf! frequented road in England does not exhibit anything under the denomination of an Inn, or houfe of entertainment, half fo miferable.

But the obliging behaviour of the landlord and his wife, who appeared to be very folicitous to ferve and ac-commodate us, was in our circumftances an irrefiftible inducement to become their guelts. This, however, wasthe only circumftance very flattering in the profpe£t before us. On examining the bed, which we had been toldwas the only one the houfe afforded, we found it fo extremely fmall, that we could only have ufed it alternately.The good woman obferving our diftrefs on this account, very civilly deflred the Gentleman who had cometo our affiftance, to inform us that ffie would endeavour, at lead, to procure another from a neighbour, if we wouldfubmit to have it laid on the floor.
