PLATE XIV.—THE ABBESS.

Wherefore I praised the dead, which are already dead, more than theJiving, which are yet alive. Eccles. iv. 2.

Death ludicrously hooded with several flow-ing plumes, and robed in a kind of gown, carriesout of her convent an Abbess, whom he is draggingwith all his might by her scapulary. The re-verend Mother with regret is leaving life and thehonours she enjoys; and expresses, by the alte-ration of her features and by her cries, the frightthat Death has produced in her soul. Behindher, under the gate of the convent, appears ayoung Nun, strangely agitated with terror andgrief.

La rev£-rendissime Mere quitte a regret la vie & les hon-neurs dont elle jouit, & exprime par l'altdrationde ses traits & par ses cris, Peffroi que la Mort ajete dans son ame. On voit derriere elle, sous laporte de Pabbaye, une jeune Nonne, vivementagit€e par la crainte & par la douleur.
