Obfervations made during a yourney along the Caucafus.

VJe ORGIE fs K is fituated near the fleep verge of a woodyValley of the Podkuma, or, as the Circaffians commonly callit, the Gum. The perpendicular height of this fleep countryis eleven fathoms. The fortifications on the land fide confiflof three whole and a femi redoubt, while on the fide towardsthe fhore, it is defended by a parapet and batteries. It has achurch ; but, except the refidence of the Governor, there isfcarcely a decent and tenantable habitation. Happily for theinhabitants, the winter is as mild here as in the mountains ofCrimea ; an advantage which this place enjoys from its fituationin the angle of the flratified high mountains that extend towards
