THE AUTHOR'S PREFACE.

concife furvey of the Crimea in the French language, yet thispamphlet by no means renders a more detailed account of itfuperfluous; from which, at length, the natural condition, theadvantages of foil and fituation, as well as the hiftory, ofthat fmall, but ever memorable, peninfula may be fufficientlyelucidated.

Many new fpecies of plants and infe&s have been difcoveredduring this long journey ; but, as the fyftematic defcription andreprefentation of thefe obje£ts are more immediately conne&edwith the completion of the Author's botanical and zoologicalworks, they have in thefe Travels only been incidentally men-tioned. He is, at prefent, alternately employed in arrangingthofe fubjeds, as far as his valetudinary ftate will permit;and, if his life fhould be fpared for a few years, he hopes thusto bid his laft farewell to the literary world, which, he isfenfible, has beftowed on him a greater fhare of approbationthan he ever flattered himfelf to deferve :

" But the time of my departure is approachingNigh is the hurricane that will fcatter my leaves !To-morrow, perhaps, the wanderer will appear—His eye will fearch for me round every field,And will—and will not find me."— Ossian.
