Nor is that it felf without its fpiritual Advantages, occafioning a Confidence in God 3 a Removal of Sins, a good Confidence, a fpiritualJ°y> pleafant Hope, and other good Things which God hath prepared for them thatlove him. Such was the humble Prayer of the Publican. Such was the Humilityand Prayer, fiuch were the Alms of Cornelius : Such was the Prayer of Moles, which called off and put a Stop, as it were by Force to the Vengeance of God,which his People had fully deferved. Such were the Prayers and good Works of allthe Fathers, whether we look to thofe of our Age, or of the old Times before them.Be ye therefore mindful (fays he) how our Fathers were faved, remember how theywere preferred in the Red Sea. Remember the Wonders which the Lord did toPharao and his Armies in the Sea. Whatever Succefs therefore happens, whetherat Home or in the Field will be attributed to God: The Means to be ufed are Hu-miliation, Prayer, Alms, and Thankfgiving, by which humane Valour is fo per-fected,that what Succefs happens, and what is the Work of God only may feem, andthat not without fome Reafon to be imputed thereto. For there are two Things, which are necejfary in all military Undertakings, Dexterity in Counfel, and quickDifpatch. It hath been a long Difpute whether Strength of Body, or of theMind were of greater EffeH? But it now ends in this, that we mußfirß takeCounfel, and then a£f vigoroufiy. Firß of all the Invocation of the Grace of God,and the divine Mercy (which is Prayer ) is neceffary : then is Advice tobe had,and laßly, we muß aiï with Vigour and Refolution. And feeing whatever is per-formed with Succefs is owing wholly to God, whoyet permits that Succefs to beaferibed to Men, fo they but purfue the right Methods, call upon him withSinglenefs of Heart, take right Counfel, and perform what hath been refolved upon
