rank according to the date of his nomination. 2 This arrangement, which isinconsistent with the proper position of that Functionary in an Order of Knight-hood, was not, however, understood to be permanent.

The Chancellor, like the Pre-late, ranks with the Knights GrandCross. His Mantle and Chapeauare the same as those of the KnightsGrand Cross; and his Badge (whichwas formed upon that of the Chan-cellor of the Order of Saint Patrick)is of gold, enamelled blue, within ared border, of a square form, repre-senting a Purse charged with theCross of Saint George, gules, sur-mounting a Maltese Cross in sal-tire, argent, within the Circle andMotto of the Order.

The Purse, for the Seal, ismade of blue velvet, surrounded bya scarlet border, embroidered withgold, having in front, on a goldground, the Cross of Saint George, gules, with a Cross of Malta, insaltire, argent, surrounded by the Circle and Motto. The strings and tasselsare made of gold and coloured silks.

The Chancellor receives neither Salary, nor Fees, and there is not the slightestemolument or advantage attached to the Office. As it was thought desirable togive a local habitation to the Order in London, the Office for the ColonialDepartment, was declared to be the Chancery of the Order “ wherein a recordof all proceedings connected therewith shall be carefully deposited and pre-served,” but no apartment has been assigned for the purpose.

His late Majesty was pleased in October 1832, to appoint a Uniformfor the Officers of the Order. That of the Chancellor consists of a blue coat, single breasted, lined with scarlet silk, with scarlet velvet cuffs and collar,
