[The custody of the Seal of the Order was originally entrusted to one of the Knights Companions; and in the1st Henry VI. 1423, Sir John Robesart was styled “ Custos Sigilli Ordinis,” with the title of “ Chancellor,’’(vide p. 435, antea,) though the Office was not expressly created until the reign of King Edward the Fourth,in 1475.]

Richard Beauchamp,Bishop of Salisbury and Deanof Windsor. Appointed Chancellor of theOrder of the Garter 10th October 1475. Died1482.

Lionel Wydville, Bishop of Salisbury. Died 1485.

Doctor John Morgan, Dean of Windsor. ReceivedRobes as Chancellor of the Order in 1491.Became Bishop of St. David’s in 1496. Died May1504.

Sir Charles Somerset, Earl of Worcester, theLord Chamberlain, and one of the Companionsof the Order, is stated to have been Chancellorin August 1523.—(Vide pp. 133, 439, antea.)Died in 1526.

Sir William Cecil, Knight. Appointed Chancellorin March, and his Patent dated in April 1553, butwas deprived before September in that year (Foedera,xv. 330.

Sir William Petre, Knight, Principal Secretary ofState. Appointed Chancellor 27th September1553. Died January 1572.

Sir Thomas Smith, Knight, Principal Secretary ofState. Appointed Chancellor 25th April 1572(Foedera, xv. 707). Died 12th August 1577.

Sir Francis Walsingham, Principal Secretary of State.Appointed Chancellor 22nd April 1578. He ap-pears to have resigned the Chancellorship of theOrder in 1588.
