HERNICIUS (Ernicius), a disciple of St.Patrick, when he was at Kill-garadh, co. Gal-way. In the Tripartite Life of St. Patrick (Col-gan, Tr. Thaum. 136, c. 50, 177 n. ® 9 ) there ismention of three brothers, Bernicius, Hibernicius,Ernicius ; they were Franks, and received placesof retirement from St. Patrick, but the onlyplace named is Baslick, co. HERO (1) (Heros, ''Hpajy, *'H pecs'), successorof St. Ignatius as third bishop of Antioch. Nealecalls him “ friend and deacon ” of Ignatius.He is said to have occupied the see twentyyears, a.d. 116-136. He is stated to haveclosed his course by martyrdom (Euseb. II. E.iii. 36, ad fin., iv. 20). He was commemoratedon Oct. 17 {Mart. Usuard., Adon.). HERO (4) ("Hpcui/), bishop of Diospolis(Thebae or Hou), in Thebais Secunda, c.362. He publicly apostatized at Antioch, pro-bably during the visit paid by the emperorJulian to that city, and, as it is said, withoutany compulsion. Not long afterwards he wasreduced to great poverty, and being equallydespised by heathen and Christian, he diedmiserably and in the streets. (Philostorg. H. E.vii. 13 ; Theophanes, C/iron. s. a. 355, Migne,Patr. Gr. cviii. 162; Ckron. Pasch. s. a. 363,Migne, u. s. xcii. 745.) This cannot have beenthe Hero [Hero (7)] mentioned by Jerome(cf. Le Quien, Or. HERO (5), a native of Alexandria and monkof Tabenne in Egypt, under St. Theodorus. HERODES (2), proconsul of Africa, to whomapplication was made for the expulsion of theDonatist bishops who had consecrated Maximian.This took place in pursuance of the decree ofthe council of Bagaia, a.d. 394, and before theexpiration of that year. Herodes appears tohave pronounced sentence against the Maximian-ists, but it appears also that it was not imme-diately or formally carried out. (Aug. En, in Ps.lvii. 15 ; c. Cresc. iii. 56-62 ; iv. 4, 5, Tillemont;69, vol. vi. 170, 171.) [Felicianus (4).]

A question has been raised as to the identifyof Herodes with Seranus, whose sentence againstthe Maximianists is on record (Aug. c. Cresc.iv. 48, 58, vol. vi. p. 570). But this seems to beunlikely, for the following reasons: (a) Augus-tine says that the case was brought before threeor four proconsuls, of whom he names the firstand the last, viz. Herodes and Theodorus. (6)This being the case, it is unlikely that in thesame treatise, though not in the same part ofit, and in a formal description of what tookplace, he should call the same person by twodifferent names, which are never used in con-junction with each other, (c) The first application was directed chiefly against Felicianus andPraetextatus, but that of Seranus againstSalvius of Membresa. ( d) In his account otthese last proceedings Augustine insinuates thatthe proconsul was influenced either by partialityor by respect for the council of Bagaia, but nosuggestion of this kind appears in reference toHerodes (Tillemont, vi. note 38, p. 725).
