having frequently expressed himself most favourably respect-ing the order, the bailli de Elacksland succeeded in obtaininghis consent for the creation of a new language in Bavaria,which was endowed by the possessions formerly belonging tothe Jesuits. Such was his adroitness and zeal, that he removedall the obstacles thrown in his way on the occasion; and thislanguage was installed in 1782, under the name of Anglo-Ba-varian, and endowed with a revenue of 171,000 florins, whichare equal to 151,703 Maltese crowns, or 15,000 pounds ster-ling. The assessment of responsions was made on this sum.

This new language was composed of the two dignifiedoffices of turcopolier and grand-prior of Bavaria, of twentycommanderies of knights of justice, and of four commanderiesof chaplains, or conventual priests. The first taxes, or re-sponsions, were originally laid on the first possessors of bene-fices, at the rate of two and a half per cent of their neat pro-,duce; but it was enacted, that all their successors should payten per cent, which would produce, according to the firstmutations, a fixed revenue of 15,150 crowns, without countingthe passages , the effects of the dead, the mortuaries or funerals,and the vacancies.

Independently of the above-mentioned acquisitions, theorder recovered some of its ancient possessions, which hadbeen very unjustly wrested from it; this restitution gave birthto a new priory, to which Malta owes its present preservation.
