reigns during the destruction of an old government and theestablishment of a new one.

The general indignation which took place among theMaltese at the dreadful conduct of the priests and some fewof their fellow-citizens did not console the grand-master forthis terrible event, the first of the kind which had ever sulliedthe annals of the order so great indeed was his affliction, thathe survived it but a very short time*.
