BALSAMUM SULPHURISCRASSUM.

Thick balfam of fulphur.Edinb.

Take a pint of linfeed oil, Adfour ounces of flowers of ful-phur. Boil them together overa gentle fire, keeping them con-tinually llirring, till they cometo the confidence of a balfam.

Linseed cil more readily dif-folves fulphur than oil olive, andthe preparation made with it isreckoned fomewhat lels difagree-able. The veflel they are boiledin ought to be capable of holdingat lead three times the quantity ofthe ingredients. As foon as theoil begins to aft upon tlie fulphur, which happens nearly at the pointof ebullition, the mixture raritiesvery much, fo as, if not prudentlyremoved from the fire, to run overinto the furnace; and as the mat-ter is very fufceptible of flame, dangerous confequences may en-fue, efpecially if the quantity islarge. The operator ought there-fore to be upon his guard in themanagement of this procefs.

These preparations arc moreconveniently and fafely made in atall glafs body, with the mouth atlead an inch in diameter, than in thecirculatory or dole vefTels in whichthey haye commonly been direftedto be prepared : for when the ful-phur and oil begin to aft vehe-mently upon each other, they notonly rarify into a large volume, but like wife throw out impetuouflygreat quantities of ail elaftic va-pour, which, if the vcifeis areclofed, or the orifices not fuflicientto ailow it a tree exit, infallblyburil them : Hoffman relates avery remarkable hiftorv of the ef-fects of .in accident of this kind.In the veflel above recommended, the procefs may be completed, without danger, in four or fivehours, by duly managing the fire;which fhould be very gentle forI i 3 fome
