Unguentum Veratri. L. White Hellebore Ointment. Ung. hclleb.albi. D. Take Jij of white hellebore-root, in powder, Jviij of pre-pared lard, ii^xx of oil of lemons; mix. It is extremely irritating, andought not to be used for children. It effectually destroys vermin.

Unguentum Vebatkins. New. Ointment of Veratrine. Takegr. ivof veratrine, 3j of prepared lard; mix, and apply for chronicrheumatism, gout, and dropsy. (Magendie.)

Unguentum Zinci. L. Ointment of Zinc. Ung. oxid. zinci. E. D.Take Jj of oxide of zinc, Jvj of prepared lard; mix, and apply tothe tarsi at bed-time, as an astringent for ophthalmia tarsi, and toexcoriated nipples; but it is not safe for the infant at the breast. Itis improved by calomel.

Unguentum Zinci Iodidis. Nerv. Ointment of Iodide of Zinc. Take5j of iodine of zinc, 3j of prepared lard, make an ointment for scro-fulous and scirrhoustumours ; 5J to be rubbed in daily and increased,if no irritation follow. (Ure.)

Upas Antiar. The juice of the Antiaris toxicaria, is a strong vegetablepoison, and used by the Indians to poison arrows.

Upas Tieute. The celebrated poison of Java, which kills in a fewseconds by inducing tetanus. It appears to contain Strychnine.(MM. Pelletier and Caventou.)

Urea. Nerv. A chemical principle derived from urine, by treating it,when evaporated to the consistence of syrup, with an equal volumeof nitric acid, at 24°. Agitate this mixture in an ice-bath, to obtaincrystals, which must be washed with water at zero, and pressed be-tween two sheets of paper. Dissolve these in water, and treat withsubcarbonate of potass, to take up the nitric acid. Evaporate todryness with a gentle heat, treat the residue with pure alcohol,which will only dissolve the urea, concentrate the solution, and crys-tallize the urea. It may be deprived of all smell and colour, byheating it with animal charcoal.

Medicinally urea is said to be diuretic, and it has also been given byM. Segalas, for diabetes, commencing with gr. xxv, and increasingto several drachms in Eau sucree. It does not appear to merit muchconfidence. (Magendie.)

Urtica. P. See Nettle.

Usquebaugh. Escubac. A liqueur, the name of which is Celtic for" Water of Life." Aqua vital. O. It is prepared by infusing foreight days, in Oiv of brandy, 5vj of saffron, gr. xxiv of mace, thepeels of an orange and two citrons; distilling this tincture in a water-bath ; then dissolving ftiv of sugar in Oij of soft water, adding it tothe former, and filtering.
