Glaucic Acid. This acid is procured from teazle and scabious, bytreating the alcoholic tincture with ether, and the precipitate thencearising first with acetate of lead, secondly with sulphuretted hydro-gen, and thirdly with heat. (Runge.)

Glue is a hard preparation of gelatine, used to cement wood, &c. Itis prepared by steeping in lime water, and then boiling down, theskins, or scraps of skins, bones, and offal of animals, into a jelly,skimming off the impurities, adding a portion of alum, and dryingit, when cold, upon nets. Fish glue is prepared, in a similar man-ner, from the skins, &c, of fish.

Gluten is a vegetable principle contained in considerable quantity inwheat. M. Tadei has discovered that it is an antidote to corrosivesublimate, or oxymuriate of mercury, and probably acts by sheath-ing its virulence. Gluten is soluble in alcohol.

Glutine. Another principle somewhat similar to gluten, but differingin not being soluble in alcohol.

Glycerine. The sweet principle of oils. (Chevreuil.)

Glycine. An earth first discovered in analyzing beryl. It forms saltswith the acids, such as sulphate of glycine.

Glycyrrhiz^e Radix. L. £. D. P. Liquorice Root, or Stick Liquorice.It has a sweetish mucilaginous taste, but little smell, and is used asa demulcent in catarrh, combined with other mucilaginous medica-ments ; but chiefly in making the extract, and in forming medicalcompounds, and covering the taste of bitters.Adulterated in the powdered form with bean flour, or with guaiacpowder, both of which render it paler than the genuine, which isyellowish brown.Enters into Confect. Glycyrrhizin. A substance found in liquorice which seems not toundergo fermentation. (Robiquet.)

Godbold's Vegetable Balsam. A nostrum composed of oxymel,with some colouring matter and perfume to disguise it. The specifi-cation of Godbold's patent, however, directs separate syrups to bemade of 42 different herbs, many of them poisonous, and then tobe mixed with four different gums, vinegar, oil of cinnamon, &c,and kept three years before it is administered ! !! By a late trial itappears that the proprietor's profits have fallen from 3000/. to 50/.per annum.
