Formic Acid. Acid of Ants, is procured by infusing half a pound ofants in two pints of boiling water, pressing out the liquor and strain-'ing. Or, it may be made artificially by applying a gentle heat to amixture of tartaric acid, water, and peroxide of manganese.Medicinally it is said to be stimulant, but it is not used.

Fothergill's Pills. A purgative nostrum, made with equal pro-portions of aloes, scammony, colocynth, oxide of antimony, and aro-matic essences.

Fowler's Solution. See Liquor Arsenicalis.

Fhangipan. An extract of milk, for preparing artificial milk, andmade by evaporating skimmed milk to dryness.

Frasera Walterl American Calumba, a non-aromatic bitter tonic,which may be given in doses of gr. x to 9j thrice a day.

Fraxinella. P. Dictamnus albus. The fresh root is bitterish andacrid, tonic, aromatic, and vermifuge, in doses of 3j to 5j of thetincture twice or thrice a day.

Freeman's Bathing Spirits. The Compound Liniment of Soapcoloured with Daffy's Elixir. See Liniment Sap. Comp.

Frankincense. See Resina. L.

French Polish is made by dissolving gum lac in spirits of wine. SeePolish.

French Red, or Rouge, for the toilette. Take 3j of genuine carmine,light in weight and strong in colour, mix it with very finely-siftedstarch powder, according to the shade required, and tempering thecolour by the eye, which will be assisted by laying it on sheets ofblack paper.

Friar's Balsam. See Tinctura Benzoini Comp. L.

Fucus. L. Bladder Wreck. Sea Weed. Fucus vesictdosus. Is internallydeobstruent in bronchocele, and externally is used in cataplasms.Its efficacy probably depends on its iodine.

Fucus Helminthocorton. P. Corsicari Moss. Is said to be vermi-fuge and purgative in doses of gr. x to 5ij or more of the powder,and in infusion 3J to 3J to Oj of water. It is also given internallyin cases of schirrous and strumous tumours. It is perhaps bestexhibited in form of jelly, with isinglass and wine.

Fulminating Powder. A mixture of 2 parts nitre, 2 parts neutralcarbonate of potass, 1 part of sulphur, and 6 parts of common salt,all finely pulverized, forms a powerful fulminating powder. (Land-
