matic, mucilaginous, narcotic, and astringent, in phthisis, ca-tarrhs, &c.

Cyperus. Several species have finely aromatic roots.

Cyprbss Powder is a fragrant compound prepared by pounding to-gether above a dozen sorts of aromatics. It is used in perfuming,quilting, stuffing, &c.

Cypress Boots. The roots of the Cuprcssus sempervirens, P. are, aswell as the leaves and fruit, aromatic, bitter, and astringent. Saidto be a powerful vermifuge, and used in infusion for destroyingvermin.

Cystic Oxide. A substance peculiar to the urine, and sometimes,though very rarely, forming entire calculi. It may be known byits solubility in alkalies, and most acids, except the acetic, whichreadily precipitates it from urine when it exists there. It has alsoa peculiar odour when burnt. (Prout.)

Cytisine. New. An alkali found in the seeds of the Cytisus laburnum,by digesting them in hot alcohol, evaporating the liquid, dissolvingthe residuum in water, and adding the acetate of lead. The liquidis then freed from the lead by sulphuretted hydrogen, and the fluidagain filtered and evaporated.Medicinally cytisine is bitter and emetic.

Daffy's Elixir (Diccy'x). Take ^iv of senna leaves, ^ij each ofrasped guaiac wood, dried elecampane root, coriander-seeds, anise-seeds, caraway-seeds, and liquorice root, Jviij of stoned raisins, Ovjof proof spirit. Digest for a week, strain through bibulous paper,and add half a pound of treacle. Sometimes given to horses.Swinton's Daffy's Elixir. Take ftiij of jalap root, jxij of senna-leaves, jiv each of coriander-seed, anise-seed, liquorice root, andelecampane root, one gallon each of wine and water. Digest forthree weeks, strain, and add a gallon of treacle. Dose ^ij to 5yj as-a carminative.

Daiiline. A vegetable principle discovered in the tubes of dahlias,and similar to inulin and starch.

Dalby's Carminative. Take ^ivss of tincture of opium, Jijss of tinc-ture of assafoetida, 5j of oil of carui, 5y of oil of peppermint, ^ v j ssof tincture of castor, 5yj of rectified spirit; mix, and put ~,ij intoeach bottle, with 5J of carbonate of magnesia, fill up with simplesyrup.Or, Mix 9ij of carbonate of magnesia, one drop of oil of peppermint.
