Cuckoo-pint, which is acrid, stimulant, and errhine in paralysis,rheumatism, and head-ache, in doses of gr. vj to 3j, given in anybland vehicle.Arrow Root of British manufacture is prepared from the roots ofCuckoo-pint, in the isle of Portland, by digging them up about mid-summer, and beating them into a pulp, which is repeatedly washedby passing it through a sieve. It is then dried in shallow pans. Itanswers all the purposes of Arrow Root, being composed chiefly ofstarch, and makes good puddings. (Mr. Fiewker.) See Sago.

Aristolochia Clematttis. P. Birthwoit. The root is stimulantand stomachic, and given in cachexia, chlorosis, and amenorrhea.The A. sylpho, and A. trilobala. Phil, and the A. hnga, A. ro-tunda, and A. pistalochia. P. are similar in quality. See Serpen-takia.

Armenian Bole. See Bole.

Armoraci;e Radix. L. E. P. Raphanus ruslicanus: radix. D. Rootof Horse Radish, Coc/dcaria armoracia. Internally it is stimulant,diuretic, and antiscorbutic, in doses of 5ss to Jj for dropsy, rheu-matism, &c. In hoarseness, jssof the expressed juice often acts likea charm, or it may be given in syrup, 5j of the root scraped to Jij ofboiling water sweetened with q. s. of sugar. Infused in milk it formsa good cosmetic for freckles.Enters into Spir. Armoraciae Comp. L. D. Infus. Armoracise Comp. L.

ArniCjE Montanje Herba. E. D. Leopard's Bane is acrid, bitter, sti-mulant, narcotic, diaphoretic, and errhine, in doses of gr. v to gr. xof the powder, or gjss of the infusion (5jss to Jviij of water), twice aday, in asthenia, ischuria paralytica, amaurosis, diarrhoea, &c.Poisonous in large doses, and is best counteracted by emetics followed bybland fluids.

Aroma, a term applied to the unknown principle which produces smell.I call it unknown, from its having hitherto remained uninvestigated,chemists having thought it sufficient to call it effluvia, aroma, &c.It appears, from the experiments of Robiquet, that odours often de-pend on the presence of a third chemical principle, besides the aromaand the air, for their development. Thus musk developes the aromaof ambergris, and ammonia the aroma of other perfumes.

Aromatic Lozenges of Steel. Prepared with sulphas ferri, and asmall quantity of tincture of cantharides, &c.

Aromatic Pastiles. Take tb^- of storax, ftj gum benjamin, ft^ lab-danum, and ftj best sealing-wax. Then add to some thick gum-ara-bic mucilage made with rose water, sixty drops of spirit of musk,mix the whole, mould into forms, and dry.
