iF.RuGO. L. E. D. Crude Verdigrise, or Subacetate of Copper. Pre-pared by moistening plates of copper with sour wine, or withvinegar, tartar, and common salt. It is composed of carbonate andacetate of copper, often with some black oxide of copper, and evenmetallic copper. English Verdigrise, as it is called, consists of sul-phate of copper and acetate of lead.Medicinally it is tonic and emetic, but rarely used. Externally escha-
rotic, but chiefly useful as a lotion in bad cases of tetter.Poisonous, producing a dry feeling of strangulation, cholic, bloodystools, cramps, retching, great thirst, constant spitting of copperymatter, &c.Anlidote, the best is large doses of sugar and water, or syrup.Test. Prussiate of potass gives a brown precipitate.Enters into Unguent. Subacet. Cupri. E. iErugo Prep. D.^Erugo Preparata. D. P. Prepared, or Purified Verdigrise. Tonicin doses from gr. ^ to gr. ss; emetic from gr. j to gr. ij. It has beengiven as an emetic in mania, &c, but is too violent to be safe. As awash in scorbutic ulcers and chancres, it is useful.iEscuLi Hippocastani Cortex. D. Bark of the Horse Chesnut. Afebrifuge tonic and astringent bitter, in doses of Jss to Jj of thepowder, or gjss to lij of the strained decoction in intermittent; butinferior to bark : externally as a lotion in gangrene.jEsculine. New. An alkali recently discovered by M. Cuszoneri inthe bark of the iEsculus Hippocastanum, and supposed to befebrifuge.^thee Aceticus. P. Acetic Ether. Procured by distilling 3000 pts.of alcohol with 2000 pts. of vinegar and 625 pts. of sulphuric acid;treating the first 4000 pts. that comes over with a small portion ofsubcarbonate of potass, and re-distilling 3000 pts.Medicinally it is stimulant, antispasmodic, and sedative, in doses ofT!\xv to 5ss in cholic, dyspepsia, drunkenness.TEtiier Hydrochi-oricus, or M. Muriaticus. P. Hydrochloric, orMuriatic Ether. Procured by distilling in Wolfe's apparatus equalparts of alcohol and muriatic acid at 25° Cent. Seldom used.jEther Nitricus. P. M. Nitrosus. D.
