TINCTURA ALOES, Lond. Tincture of Aloes.

" Take of extract of spiked Aloes powdered, half an ounce-,extract of Liquorice, an ounce and a half; water, a pint; rec-tified Spirit, four fluid ounces. Macerate in a sand-bath untilthe extracts are dissolved; then strain."

" Take of socotorine Aloes in powder, half an ounce.;extract of Liquorice dissolved in eight ounces of boiling water,an ounce and a half; proof Spirit, eight fuid ounces. Digestfor seven days; then strain.

Tinctura Aloes Socotorin^e, Edin. Tincture of Soco-torine Aloes.

" Take of socotorine Aloes in powder, half an ounce; ex-tract of Liquorice, one ounce and a Jtalf; Alcohol, four ounces;water, apoiaid. Digest for seven days, with a gentle heat, ina close vessel, which is to be frequently shaken (a circumstanceto be attended to in preparing all the tinctures); then pour offthe clear tincture."

This may be regarded rather an aqueous solution than atincture, the quantity of spirit being too small to serve anyother purpose than that of preventing decomposition. It maybe used in the same cases as the extract of aloes; but, notwith-standing- the presence of the liquorice, the bitterness of thealoes is so intense and disagreeable, as to prevent it from beingoften prescribed. Its dose is from f^ss. to fljss.

TINCTURA ALOES iETHEREA, 'Edin. EtherealTincture of Aloes.

" Take of socotorine Aloes, Myrrh, of each, in powder, anounce and a half; English Saffron cut, an ounce; sulphuricEther with Alcohol, a pound. Digest the myrrh with the etherfor four days in a closed bottle; then add the saffron and thealoes. Digest again for four days, and when the dregs havesubsided, pour off the tincture."

The spirit of sulphuric ether is supposed to afford a moregrateful tincture than spirit of wine; and in cases attendedwith spasm, as in hysteria connected on obstructed menstrua-tion, this solvent may prove serviceable, independent of thematter it holds in solution. It is a warm stomachic purgative,and is advantageously given in dyspeptic affections, jaundice,gout, chlorosis, and other cases in which aloetics are indi-cated. In doses of fjj. or fjij. it acts chiefly as a stomachic;but purges briskly in larger doses.
